Unit 8:    The Creeds

Sunday School Curriculum:  Weeks of 26 November and 3 December:  Materials for Unit 8 (The Creeds) were distributed on 26 November.  Please note the following projects:

  • Week of 26 November:  Family Project
    • We just celebrated the Feast of Christ the King.  Have your child draw a picture of Jesus as King.
    • 30 November is the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle.  Andrew, in addition to being referred to as the “First-Called” in the Eastern Church (cf. John 1.35—42) is also the patron saint of (among others) Scotland, Russia, and Romania.  His symbol is the St. Andrews Cross .  Have your child explore images of the St. Andrews Cross; e.g., look of the flags of Scotland, the Russia naval ensign, etc.
  • Week of 3 December:  Family Project
    • Advent begins on 3 December.  Consider making a simple Advent calendar.  For example, for each day that you count down to Christmas use an image.  Maybe once a week use a phot of your family gathered in celebration.  For the other days have your child draw a simple (and small) picture of a Christmas ornament, or a wrapped gift, etc.  Let him/her use a lot of imagination.
  • Week of 10 December:  Now that you have been working on images of how we celebrate, explore with your child how we prepare for celebration.
    • Start with the example of a birthday celebration.  How do you get ready for it?  Now consider how we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus?
      • How we prepare to welcome Jesus?

Sr. Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians. Explore with your children how you make music or how you enjoy listening to it. Look at the church hymnal (The Hymnal 1982). Pick a hymn you know already, and try to sing it with your children.

For parents and older children: The attached document includes the complete text of the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed, together with detailed annotations of where to find scriptural bases for the statements made about God in the Creed. There’s a lot of material! Therefore, keep the document as a reference, but pick a statement or statements you want to explore, and do so in greater depth.

For parents and younger children:     Explore the following questions with your children.

  • We believe in the Father. Explore the ideal of fatherhood, and how this ideal informs us of how God care for us.
  • We believe in God the Son. Explore the ideal relationship of a son or daughter to his or her parents.
  • We believe in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is often referred to as the bond of love between the persons of the godhead. Discuss what love is like not as a feeling but as a choice, about what we choose to do because of love.
